Years & Years are back in action… mostly.
Just in case you’ve been out of the loop: The group – formerly Olly Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen – announced in March that Years & Years will now be moving forward as a solo vehicle for Olly.
“There’s been some changes that we want to fill you in on. This upcoming new album has been an Olly endeavour and we’ve decided that Years & Years will continue as an Olly solo project,” the group announced on Instagram. “The three of us are still good friends. Mikey will be part of the Y&Y family and play with us live and õmre will focus on being a writer producer. These past twelve months have been crazy for us all and we want to thank you for the love and support you’ve given us over the years (& years).”
Following his recent jump into acting with a leading role in the critically-acclaimed HBO Max show, It’s A Sin, the decision isn’t all that surprising. Olly‘s always been the frontman, now he can just own it fully.
This new journey kicks off in the form of new single “Starstuck,” the first new Years & Years music since 2018’s Palo Santo, which is (sadly) not a cover of the Lady Gaga classic off of The Fame.
Instead, the track is instant cosmic bliss that provokes an immediate euphoria and need for some summer fun on the dance floor.
The chorus is an instantly catchy chant: “I can’t help it/ I get starstruck around you/ What can I do baby…,” Olly declares across stomping synths, bright piano chords and a bassline built for sidewalk strutting.
And that post-bridge beat break? Simply hypnotic!
“‘Starstruck‘ came together one night at a studio in the countryside outside of London. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen so many stars, you get used to them not being there when you live in the city. Since we’ve all had to stop, all I’ve wanted to do is go out and dance. So I’ve been putting all that pent up energy into the music,” Olly Alexander said in a statement. “‘Starstruck’ is about the rush you get when you’re with somebody you’re really into, it’s about holding onto a good feeling and not letting it go. Like most of us I’ve spent the past year at home, and I wanted to create something super positive and fun for people (and myself) to bop along too. Whatever we’re doing or wherever we are in life, I think we all deserve three minutes of interstellar ecstasy.”
While the song seems be driven with the same disco-flavored energy that many of the pop girls have been giving us over the last year (Dua Lipa‘s Future Nostalgia, Jessie Ware‘s What’s Your Pleasure?, Lady Gaga‘s Chromatica and Kylie Minogue‘s Disco, among others), there’s simply no denying it’s instant likability.
Years & Years have provided us with dance gems for years already, and “Starstruck” is certainly no exception. Olly simply can’t help it, on the dance floor is where he belongs!
