Sam Smith is done playing it safe.
Following the success of his Normani–assisted smash “Dancing With A Stranger,“ which was a No. 1 airplay hit in the U.S. and U.K, the Oscar-winning hit-maker is back on his own again with “How Do You Sleep? – Sam‘s most daring output from his usual shtick, and (dare I say) also one of his finest songs to date.
Boldly charging into mainstream production territory with the help of pop master crafters – Max Martin, Savan Kotecha and ILYA, Sam lays his signature full-bodied chops atop a hard-hitting bass beat that brings to mind Ariana Grande‘s “God Is a Woman.”
While the beat is thoroughly Top 40, the songcraft is still very much Sam Smith‘s signature, featuring emotionally charged lyrics about heartbreak (“I’m done hating myself for feeling / I’m done crying myself awake /I’ve gotta leave and start the healing /But when you move like that I just want to stay…“) and the singer’s signature soaring vocal acrobatics.
And if the song isn’t enough to sell you, the stunning, dance-heavy Grant Singer-directed visual surely will.
“This year, both personally and musically, I feel so free,” Sam said in a statement. “More than ever I have had so much fun making this record and this video. Time to dance darlings x”
This is the Sam Smith I’ve been waiting for. LOVE!
