Clock strikes upon the hour, and the sun begins to fade… Pull up your pants and hit the dancefloor: Bebe Rexha is back at it again — and not a moment too soon.
After releasing the first half of her debut LP, All Your Fault: Pt. 1, in February, the “I Got You” singer-songwriter has done it yet again in the form of “The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)” featuring Lil Wayne, the lead single off of All Your Fault: Pt. 2.
Produced by Lorde collaborator Joel Little, “The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)” is Bebe‘s record label diss track that’s disguised as a self-empowerment anthem, inspired by the Whitney Houston classic. From the apologetic opening – “I’m sorry, I’m not the most pretty/ I’ll never ever sing like Whitney” – to the liberating lines in the first verse – “Gonna live it up, ’cause it’s dangerous/ No, I don’t wanna play the part (Amen)” – Bebe‘s not holding back.
“It’s a f-you song to the record label,” Bebe recently expressed in a radio interview. “When you’re developing as an artist you have to kinda fight the sterotype of what everybody’s expecting of you, what way you should be, how you should look, what color your hair should be, how your make up should be and what you should wear. But the most important thing is if you like you and if you like the way you look.”
Genius backstory aside, the song’s an actual earworm, too! Set atop a bright, jaunty piano melody and hard-knocking beats (with some slight, throwback doo-wop vibes), Bebe formally sets herself free (with another smart nod to Aaliyah): “I just wanna dance with somebody/ I just wanna dance with somebody/ It could be anybody, tell me, are you that somebody?/ Don’t matter who you are, just love me the way I are/ I just wanna dance with somebody…“
The song’s chock full of killer lyrics weaved around excellent melodies – and, with any luck, it’ll hopefully get the mainstream public onboard in a big(ger) way this time around. Bebe deserves it!
