Katy Perry‘s got another hit on her hands y’all, “Chained To the Rhythm” roars onto the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 4 this week making it her 14th Hot 100 top 10 and the third-highest-debuting of her 25 Hot 100 entries.
In celebration, Katy has just dropped the song’s accompanying music video directed by Matthew Cullen, who also helmed the videos for “Dark Horse” and “California Gurls.” In the clip, we see Katy entering some sort of a futuristic theme park where people walk in robot-like formation and literally get sucked into the park’s attractions, like a heart-shaped roller coaster and a human-sized hamster wheel. Things take a turn when Skip Marley steps into the fantasy-like world via a giant TV to deliver his inspiring verses (“It is my desire/ Break down the walls to connect, inspire/ Ay, up in your high place, liars/ Time is ticking for the empire/ The truth they feed is feeble/ As so many times before/ They greed over the people“). This is when Katy truly realizes what’s really going on – she is woke!
While the concept and message of it all is very clear, I can’t help but feel like she didn’t drive it all the way home. The breakthrough at the end just seemed a little lackluster. That aside, I quite enjoyed the whole big production of it all. What do you guys think?
