Happy Tuesday music lovers! There’s a few names I’d like you to get familiar with as we approach 2017…
Tkay Maidza is one of those names, but you’ve likely seen it before unless you’re new around here. She’s young. She’s Australian. She sings, raps, and sounds little bit like M.I.A. and Azealia Banks, with a little bit of AlunaGeorge thrown in there. You’ve may have heard her spitting a verse on Troye Sivan‘s Blue Neighbourhood standout “DKLA” or even on Martin Solveig‘s recent dance smash “Do It Right” – one of our Song of the Week‘s back in May.
She also dances, has style for days, and has an abundance of confidence despite being a tiny little thing. I love her.
Last month, Tkay dropped her full-length debut album TKAY and it’s truly one of the standouts of the year. I kid you not: TKAY is an exciting and unhinged listen from start to finish. It’s dance. It’s electro. It’s hip-hop. It’s reggae. It’s pop. It’s a lil’ bit of everything. To put it simply… She’s the future.
This week, Tkay dropped the music video for one of my favorite cuts: “Simulation“! The track, which is the second official single from her debut LP, is a joyous and thrilling tropical-influenced dance number all about overcoming complacency. “It’s so common that people get lazy when they feel content because they have partially achieved their goals and are living the way they dreamt about,” Tkay said in a statement. “Thus beginning to think it’ll last forever… I have noticed that things constantly change, so when something doesn’t go to plan it’s like cracks in the simulation become visible.”
