Between “I’m In Control,” their Flume slow-burner “I Remember” and the ZHU-prodcued “My Blood,” AlunaGeorge have already given us plenty of reason to believe that her upcoming sophomore album, also titled I Remember (due out September 16), will be one of 2016’s very best!
For their latest output “Mean What I Mean,” the English duo – Aluna Francis and George Reid – have collaborated with rising rappers Dreezy and Leikeli47. On the cheeky club banger, Aluna makes it clear that she is not here for your silly advances as she laces her vocals above an infectious tropical soundscape, loaded with exotic drum loops catchy horn melodies. “I mean what I mean when I say so/ Not tryna be mean when I say no/ So don’t play a fool and twist my rules/ I mean what I mean when I say so,” she declares.
“It got kind of written and produced in different places,” Aluna told Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1. “The lyrics really come from… it’s a very genuine place I’m singing from here. I was in a situation… I said ‘no.’ The person I was with was like ‘no, you mean yes! That’s what you mean. I know what you mean and you mean yeah cause you’re just playing hard to get.'”
