Zendaya is officially ready to give us “Something New“!
The 19-year-old triple-threat gave us a taste of what we could expect from her upcoming sophomore album late last year with her darker, more mature electro-R&B cut “Close Up,” along with a fierce fashion spread and a slick accompanying fashion film directed by Rankin.
As with any pop starlet who’s come from the Disney machine, there’s always a chance that the mini diva in question is unable to crossover (musically) into the mainstream – especially when the focus has been on everything but her talent as a singer. But judging by Zendaya‘s just released new single “Something New” featuring Chris Brown, I think she’ll be just fine.
The infectious Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Khris Riddick-Tynes-crafted urban-pop jam – which heavily samples TLC‘s classic ’90s hit “Creep” – sounds like a blend of Tinashe (“2 On“), Natalie La Rose (“Somebody“), and any number of Y2K era hits, as Zendaya smoothly lays down her verses above finger snaps, trap hi-hats, hard-hitting bass and chilly sighs, while Breezy borrows lyrics from the CrazySexyCool hit.
Brown‘s recent features – Pia Mia “Do It Again” and Tinashe “Player” – haven’t done much for the ladies, but maybe with the right visual and push, Zendaya‘s “Something New” can be the one that breaks the loosing streak. Here’s hoping (for her sake)!
