“I don’t know why I cry/ But I think it’s cause I remembered for the first time/ Since I hated you/ That I used to love you.” At last, our beloved Harajuku Queen Gwen Stefani has truly returned.
Fresh off debuting the song live at her special solo concert at Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday (October 17) in New York City, the No Doubt frontwoman has revealed her new single “Used To Love You” in its full, beautiful studio finished glory. (It’s excepted to hit iTunes at midnight)
Longtime Gwen fans hoping for some Love. Angel. Music. Baby and The Sweet Escape vibes ought to be thoroughly satisfied: The Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels co-penned, Jr Rotem co-produced gem is signature Stefani electro-pop balladry, as the “Cool” pop veteran gets really real about her recent divorce from her husband of thirteen years, Gavin Rossdale: “Never thought this would happen / I’ve let it sink in / You’re gone / Don’t know, know what I’m feeling / I must be dreaming / You’re gone…,” she cries — a welcome return to form after a less thrilling foray into trying to recreate “Hollaback Girl” with last year’s comeback track “Spark The Fire.”
“It didn’t feel right,” Gwen recently told Entertainment Weekly about scrapping previous material to start from scratch. “I didn’t feel fulfilled. That record with Benny [Blanco] was done that way because I had just given birth and had just started on The Voice and felt like I should do something in music, but what was I going to do? There wasn’t enough time. So I tried to make a record where I was just kind of involved — which is how a lot of people do it, but it didn’t work for me.”
