It’s about that time to refresh Queer Necessities, my monthly LGBTQ-focused playlist where I catch you up on the latest releases by rising queer talent and fierce allies.
The cover star for November is London singing and songwriting talent SXMSON in celebration of his brand new anti-love song, “(Please Don’t) Talk About Love,” which sees SXMSON refuse to be pressured into a committed relationship.
SXMSON has written and worked with the likes of Laidback Luke, Grammy-nominated Maths Time Joy (Mahalia, Snakehips, Gallant, Sinead Harnett), SAKIMA (Troye Sivan, Tate McRae, R3hab), Gil Lewis (Kelly Clarkson, AJ Mitchell) and One Bit (Noah Cyrus).
“(Please Don’t) Talk About Love” serves as his second 2021 release following “L2ly” earlier this year. The tongue-in-cheek track was heavily inspired by SXMSON’s own experiences in dating and sheds light on the moment he realised that the person he had been casually dating wanted to take things to the next level, though the feeling wasn’t mutual.
“‘(Please Don’t) Talk About Love‘ was written during a particular time in my life when commitment and being in love would really freak me out – It kinda still does,” SXMSON said in a statement. “Transparency in dating has become pretty hard to come by, and most of the time, I would rather be brutal and honest, instead of fake and vague. This song is about owning how you feel, being honest with your emotions and not feeling bad about just wanting fun, instead of commitment.”
This month’s selections also include new singles from MNEK, JORDY, Dua Saleh, GESS, Elderbrook, Tama Gucci, Keiynan Lonsdale, Infinite Coles, ZEE MACHINE and much more.
