It’s about that time to refresh Queer Necessities, my monthly LGBTQ-focused playlist where I catch you up on the latest releases by rising queer talent and fierce allies.
The cover star for May is rapper, poet, and trailblazer Mykki Blanco in celebration of the upcoming release of their new mini-album, Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep, due out on June 18.
It marks Blanco’s first official release in nearly five years since their debut full-length Mykki album and comprises of 9-tracks, featuring guest appearances from Kari Faux, Blood Orange, Bruno Ribeiro and Big Freedia.
In Mykki‘s own words: “For me, I am one of those artists who many would say has taken the longer road to get to where I am now, but it’s that journey which has been the reward because the journey really has been my life; the career has just been the outer shell to the deeper things that I’ve experienced, and I can only be here now because of this journey.”
The playlist kicks off highlighting Mykki‘s new single, “Love Me,” featuring Jamila Woods and Jay Cue.
“‘Love Me‘ is essentially about so many forms of love, patience, trust, time,” said Blanco in a statement. “It is about the potion that is created when you sift through the ingredients that create ‘love’, the alchemy we as human beings take part in to convey these feelings deep inside of us.”
There’s plenty more around the corner from where “Love Me” came from so get caught up now if you haven’t already! This month’s selections also include new singles from Starrah, VINCINT, Hayley Kiyoko, Carlos Guevara, CHAV, Greyson Chance, The Aces, Ysak, Siena Liggins, girl in red and much more.
