If you haven’t heard by now, Selena Gomez is back at it again. Except this time around, it’s en Español.
Yes, Selena Marie Gomez, who is in fact a “proud third-generation American-Mexican,” is about to give us a full Latina moment with the release of her first-ever Spanish-language EP, titled Revelación (Revelation), on March 12.
After dropping the dreamy and bouncy lead single “De Una Vez” earlier this month, Selena‘s ready to turn up the heat a bit with her Rauw Alejandro-assisted follow-up “Baila Conmigo,” which just dropped Today (January 29) alongside the official video.
“Baila Conmigo,” which translates to “Dance With Me,” finds Selena taking a bit of a backseat on this one — but there’s at least very solid company and a sweet melody the whole way through. Gliding across sultry acoustics and a reggaeton-drenched beat, the two singers take turns exchanging sweet nothings: “No entiendo mucho, pero baila, baila, baila conmigo/ Baila, baila y yo te sigo/ Pégate, ven, suéltate/ No te me vayas sin las gana’ de volver/ Por eso, baila, baila, baila conmigo…,” they sensually croon.
It’s not exactly screaming at you to dance, it’s more a “Slow Down” dance if you will. The combination of that and the sticky-sweet back and forth works in its favor and feels fresh without trying too hard.
“With ‘Baila Conmigo,’ I want to get everyone dancing,” Selena said in a statement. “The video portrays the sense of isolation we all are experiencing right now and how music truly does connect us all no matter where we are in the world.”
My one gripe? “Baila Conmigo” is solid (I prefer it to “De Una Vez“), but it’s hard to ignore the fact that it plays more like a Rauw Alejandro song featuring Selena Gomez. She’s not even the first voice you hear… I actually would’ve liked a little more Selena on this one.
WITH THAT SAID, I’m intrigued and looking forward to what else this Spanish project will bring. Selena’s got all the resources to make sure this is good so at the very least it’ll be an enjoyable foray.
“Baila Conmigo” is available on all streaming platforms now!
