You can’t keep a good girl down…
Ariana Grande has given us the great pleasure of remaining that consistent queen in pop over the past seven years. After dropping her acclaimed Thank U, Next album last year (I’m still not over “ghostin“), the pint-sized pop princess wasted no time keeping us quite satisfied throughout 2020: from her Sweetener World Tour live album at the very end of December to her charity single with Justin Bieber (“Stuck with U“) to that indie, underground dance-pop collab with Lady Gaga, “Rain On Me.” Heard of it?
Her mission is clear:
Ariana proudly introduces round six today (October 23) with the release of “Positions,” the title track to her upcoming album Positions, due out NEXT WEEK (October 30).
The track, produced by London on da Track as well as frequent collaborators Mr. Franks and TBHits, is essentially about all the different roles Ariana is willing to take on to please her special someone.
“Boy, I’m tryna meet your mama on a Sunday / And make a lotta love on a Monday / Never need no, no one else, babe, ’cause I’ll be / Switchin’ the positions for you / Cookin’ in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom / I’m in the Olympics, way I’m jumping through hoops…” she sensually pledges across the hook.
Much like Dangerous Women fave “Sometimes,” Sweetener‘s “everytime” and Thank U, Next’s “make up,” “Positions” finds Ari sitting comfrotably in her mid-tempo, R&B state of mind sweet spot. It isn’t necessarily better than any of those songs mentioned, but it does feel like the most logical sonic continuation from where she left us off — and it’s arguably her catchiest from the batch. I’m not mad at it one bit.
As if the song wasn’t enough, it comes packaged with with a glossy music video. Directed by the legendary Dave Meyers, the visual finds Ariana in the White House as our first female president. When she’s not signing documents in the Oval Office, she’s cooking up storm in the kitchen and striking poses in the bedroom.
In short… we’re off to a very solid start my friends. Ari, we do not deserve you.
