Julia Michaels is back in full force…
Granted, the hit-making diva never really went away to begin with. Over the past year she’s contributed a bunch of pop gems for our favorite pop stars, including three songs on Selena Gomez‘s latest album Rare – “Lose You To Love Me,” “Look At Her Now” and “Fun,” as well as Dua Lipa‘s “Pretty Please,” Zara Larsson‘s “Love Me Land,” The Chicks‘ “Julianna Calm Down” – and she’s also sitting pretty with JP Saxe on the Billboard Hot 100 with their ballad “If The World Was Ending.” She’s been doing just fine.
Therefore, it’s really no surprise that her first solo release of 2020, “Lie Like This,” is a surefire smash too.
From the very first play, the track – produced by fellow hit-makers The Monsters & Strangerz – feels instantly like a refreshingly, more assured Julia as she gets lost in a fucks-free reverie of lovin’: “Head on your shoulder you keep pullin’ me close/ I’m spillin’ over tryin’ not to unfold/ I don’t need to tell you but I’m lettin’ you know/ The truth is I can’t resist/ Whenever we lie like this…,” she admits across the glossy soundscape and neon synths.
“It’s about being hesitant about this new, beautiful thing and just giving in anyway, because you know that it’s really special,” Julia said in a statement. “There are so many spectrums of love. One minute, you’re crying on the floor because you’ve been broken up with or something didn’t work out the way that you wanted to. Then, all of a sudden, you’re kissing in a park and you’re holding hands with someone new and you’ve got all these butterflies. It’s just such a broad spectrum, such a range of emotions—love—and I wanted to distill its essence into a song.”
It’s a big, bold and liberated display of Julia‘s increasingly confident (and newly dark-dyed) personality. I’m 100% here for the sexy Julia era!
