Katy Perry‘s got her sparkle back.
As seen above, the former Teenage Dream princess-turned-mommy-to-be has decided to clown around a bit with the cover reveal of her forthcoming fifth studio album, titled Smile, which is due out on August 14.
“I wrote the title track from the album when I was coming through one of the darkest periods of my life and had lost my smile,” Katy said in a statement. “When I listen to it now, it’s a great reminder that I made it through. It’s three minutes of energizing hopefulness. This whole album is my journey towards the light – with stories of resilience, hope, and love.”
The track was co-produced by faves Josh Abraham and Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein, who also co-produced Ciara‘s “Overdose,” Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Turn Me Up,” Allie X‘s “Vintage,” as well as Kelly Clarkson‘s “Hello,” “Alone” and “You Love Me.” Just to name a few of their gems!
It’s essentially about finding peace – a big, bubbly and feel-good pop throb, packed with a cheeky disco-tinged vibe throughout, much like her very own “This Is How We Do” and “International Smile” from PRISM.
“Yeah, I’m thankful/ Scratch that, baby, I’m grateful/ Gotta say it’s really been a while/ But now I got back that smile…,” Katy chants. This chorus is instant earworm, crooned like a signature Katy bop.
Sure, the song isn’t entirely the most lyrically astounding piece of pop to hit the airwaves, nor is it sonically innovative, but it is undeniably melodic and joyful. I think we all could use a bit of joy right now.
I’m ready for more of this humble pie.
