Getting mixed messages? Disillusioned with romance? Confused about what is real and what isn’t?
Ellie Goulding‘s got the song for you: “Power“!
The just released single is Miss Goulding‘s latest offering from her forthcoming album, following a string of releases that included “Hate Me” with Juice WRLD, her smash, “Close to Me,” with Diplo and Swae Lee, and her most recent single, “Worry About Me” featuring blackbear, all of which have been varying levels of “good.”
“Power,” however, is nothing short of GREAT. The Jonny Coffer & Jamie Scott-crafted gem is full of sweeping melodies, brooding verses and lush pop production. It’s the same Ellie we’ve come to know and adore, just bit bigger and bolder. She’s quite literally owning her “Power.”
“Beautiful lies on a Friday night/ Starting to wonder where we lost the magic/ Head in the clouds, talking so loud, all I hear is static/ I’m not a material girl, everything in your world just feels like plastic/ Wearing your crown, it’s pulling me down…,” Ellie croons on the almighty chorus, which interpolates “Be The One” by Dua Lipa. “You just want the power, you’re not really down for love/ You just want the power/ The power!“
“I wanted to release this song off my upcoming album as a preview into the world my new album is in! ‘Power‘ is about relationships in the 21st century, how they can now be dictated by social media, superficiality and material things. Dating can sometimes start out with lies or embellishm ents. The girl in the song is disillusioned by love and the cruel, good looking, self-obsessed people she keeps ending up with,” Ellie said in a statement. “I love to have euphoric moments in my songs (like the ‘Power‘ chorus) as though I’ve accepted and surrendered to the fucked-up-ness of everything. I wanted the video to convey that too. I filmed the video myself during lockdown.”
This is what I’ve been waiting to hear from Ellie this era. A hit from the very first play!
