‘Malibu’: Kim Petras Returns With A Summer Escape!
Get in the car music sluts: Kim Petras is taking us too “Malibu“!
After dropping her first full-length project Clarity last year (it’s still all about “Sweet Spot” for me), the pop princess on-the-rise wasted no time hopping right back in the studio to record a follow-up to her 2019 debut — and “Malibu” is our first taste of what’s to come from the next round.
Gliding across dancefloor-ready, fresh ‘n summery pulsations, Kim is hitting us with one of the more captivating and catchy pop odes to the West Coast since — well, Katy Perry‘s “California Girls,” which coincidentally was released exactly 10 years ago today (May 7). Can you believe?
“Malibuuuuuuu / And all your kisses taste like/ Malibu…,” Kim chants on the ear worm of a chorus.
“‘Malibu‘ is a return to colour, the feeling of being in love, and the escapism pop that I love the most,” Kim said in a statement. “After Clarity, I had cried all my tears and moved on, so this is a reflection of how I’ve been feeling. I just want ‘Malibu‘ to be a fizzy, refreshing drink that comes to you during this quarantine and makes you forget all your anxieties. I hope this can be a little vitamin shot that brightens your day.”
It’s an endlessly hook-heavy lovestruck anthem with just the right amount of bounce and bite — a sparkling pop gem in its purest form. (Obviously. It’s what we’ve come to expect.) Our first early summer anthem has arrived.
