And just like that, Selena Gomez is already back with more!
After dropping her long-awaited album Rare (it’s all about “Vulnerable,” still) just three months ago, the pop princess wasted no time hopping right back into The Scene (see what I did there?) to provide us with even more musical distraction in 2020.
Today (April 9), Selena‘s dropped the deluxe edition of Rare, featuring three previously-unreleased tracks: the new single “Boyfriend,” as well as “She” and “Souvenir,” all appear on the beefed-up version.
“Many of you know how excited I’ve been to release a song called ‘Boyfriend.’ It’s a lighthearted song about falling down and getting back up time and time again in love, but also knowing that you don’t need anyone other than yourself to be happy,” Selena said in a statement. “We wrote it long before our current crisis, but in the context of today. I want to be clear that a boyfriend is nowhere near the top of my list of priorities. Just like the rest of the world, I’m praying for safety, unity and recovery during this pandemic.”
All of the songs are varying levels of “good” and sit comfortably as new additions to Rare, but there’s really one standout here — and that’s “Boyfriend.”
Produced by The Roommates and co-penned with her trusty songwriting dream team Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels, “Boyfriend” is a refreshingly sexy serving from Selena that plays like an even more assured companion to Selena‘s 2016 Top 10 hit “Hands to Myself,” propelled forward by her now signature soft sing-talk delivery and a smartly used “Mystery of Love” by Mr. Fingers sample.
“I want a boyfriend/ But I just keep hitting dead ends/ Try to take a shortcut, but I get cut again and again (Yeah, ooh),” she sings on the hook, that grows on you with every listen. “I want a boyfriend (Uh-huh)/ Tell me, are there any good ones left?/ I keep finding wrong ones, but I want love again and again…“
The song may not be entirely revolutionary – we’ve become a bit numb to the Selena formula at this point – but it’s still a solid addition to Rare I think – something a little less serious and more fun, like pop should be. I think we can all use a little bit of that right now. Thank you Selena!
