There’s just no stopping the machine that is Ariana Grande.
Less than six months after dropping her album thank u, next, the current 10-time MTV VMA nominee teams up with her frequent collaborators, L.A. duo Social House, on a new collaboration called “boyfriend“!
For those unfamiliar with Social House… the writing-production duo – comprised of Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson – are the creative team behind Ariana‘s #1 hits “thank u, next” and “7 rings.” They are set to release their debut EP Everything Changed… on August 9th and will be joining Ariana on her Sweetener World Tour, which heads to Europe later this month.
So basically… “boyfriend” is Ariana‘s way of showing her support for her friends. Luckily, the results are quite satisfying as they trade sweet verses across a very infectious, nostalgic-feeling R&B-pop crossover.
“I feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people i know!,” Ariana explained in a statement. “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. even tho they want to. We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap and trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person… but also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.”
The song honestly wouldn’t feel so out of place on Ariana‘s thank u, next album. It’s a little more of the same… but are we mad at it? Not at all.
