It’s a Hot Girl Summer, indeed. Or in this case, a HAIM girl summer!
After teasing the track during recent live shows, the group have finally released their brand new single “Summer Girl,” their first new music since 2017’s Something to Tell You.
Danielle Haim explained that she originally started writing the track when her partner (and producer) Ariel Rechtshaid was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. “I started the song when I found out my partner had cancer. I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically,” she said in a statement. “Whenever I would come home in between shows I wanted to be his sunshine – his summer when he was feeling dark. His hope when he was feeling hopeless.”
Musically, the dreamy track is much more chilled-out and jazz-driven than HAIM‘s usual guitar-forward funk-pop signature. Rechsthaid co-produced “Summer Girl” with Rostam, who wrote the sax riff in a “couple minutes.” The bassline and “doo doo doos” are inspired by Lou Reed‘s “Walk on the Wild Side.” It’s very much a road trip, windows down, hands in the wind, summertime type of vibe. Like the inspiration behind the song, it’s musical medicine for the heavy hearted. They’re chill for the summer, if you will.
It also arrives with a music video directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously shot their videos for the last go round. Welcome back, girls!
