Thankfully, Ava‘s up for the challenge. She’s just released her follow-up single called “So Am I,” and like her breakthrough single, the pop throb was produced by Cirkut.
“[The song] is about loving yourself, being different, being an outcast and not fitting in the format that society wants to put us in – just celebrating what really makes you different,” Ava said in a statement about the song. “Whenever I’m feeling down, I remind myself that my flaws make me perfect, because in reality there is no perfect.”
The empowerment anthem plays like a blend of “Sweet But Psycho” and MARINA‘S “Primadonna” (a compliment!), as she lays down her encouraging message across an array of buoyant pop beats. “Do you ever feel like a misfit?/ Everything inside you is dark and twisted/ Oh, but it’s okay to be different/ ‘Cause baby, so am I…,” Ava chants on the hook.
“So Am I” doesn’t necessarily feel better than “Sweet But Psycho,” but it does feel like the most logical sonic continuation as she continues to build her name — and it’s arguably even more universal in its appeal. I remain neutral.
