Now, Mr. DJ. I’ve asked you three times already. Play my motherfuckin’ song!
Fresh off the back of incredible years for both acts – BRIT-nominated artist, producer, DJ and songwriter Jax Jones has partnered with Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander on a brand new collaboration called “Play,” an undeniable soon-to-be-smash!
The song sees Olly revisiting “King” levels of dance-pop euphoria, layered between stomping House-pulsations and warm waves of synths. The song glitters with a classic kind of disco sheen while still relishing in some modern blips and bleeps — and of course, those distinct ’90’s boyband-like Olly croons. The pairing is, quite simply, a no-brainer. A very solid addition to Jax‘s growing collection of stellar collaborations.
“How long ’til you play me the song/ That will make me belong to you?,” Olly chants on the instant hook. “One dance with my baby tonight/ And we’ll dance ’til the night is through (dance)…“
“Olly’s got one of those unique voices – he commands your attention as soon as you hear him sing – he’s a compelling artist,” Jax said in a statement. “We had a lot of fun writing this song together and it was great to collaborate with someone so down to earth and open to new ideas. After we had written the song I started building a track with a strong UK Garage influence, as well as my love of soul and house.”
Speaking of the collaboration, Olly adds; “Working with Jax was really fun and we just giggled the whole time and danced around. I wrote loads of ideas and then we picked the ones we liked and made the song out of it. I love dance music because it makes me feel invincible, but it has tension in the lyrics, so I tried to create a bit of that – like how long till you play me the damn song! I liked the idea of a track that could make you fall in love. You’re so obsessed with hearing it that it’s like you’ve been hypnotized – I wanna hear that song!”
