We’ve had the great pleasure of hearing a good portion of Rita Ora‘s upcoming second studio album Phoenix at this point: From the brilliant “Anywhere” and “Let You Love Me” to “Your Song,” “Lonely Together” with the late Avicii and “For You (Fifty Shades Freed)” with Liam Payne — and they’re all varying levels of pop greatness. Okay maybe not “Girls,” but we can give her a pass.
The multi-talented chanteuse just dropped yet another cut from the collection called “Velvet Rope,” and this one is certainly no exception.
Crafted alongside RØMANS and Jimmy Napes (Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, etc.), the track is as instantly infectious as the rest of what we’ve already heard thus far, but with a more organic, R&B-driven sound than Rita‘s dance-ready pop affairs.
“I heard that you been living it up, living it up/ Where did I go wrong?/ Only yesterday, you were beside me, -side me/ Now I’m just another one,” Rita chants across a simple piano melody, hand claps and a choir of background singers. “You’re the one who’s giving it up, giving it up/ Singing that same song/ You’re the only one I want beside me, -side me/ Now I’m just another one/ Singing that same song.”
Rita has already established her euphoric dance-pop aesthetic, so it’s nice to finally hear what she can do with a more instrumental based production. One trick pony she is not – I’m into it!
