Sweetener? Thank u, next.
Ariana Grande‘s wasting no time moving on to the next phase of her career…
Less than three months after dropping her fourth studio album Sweetener, the pop princess wasted no time hopping right back in the studio to record a follow-up — and the just released title track “thank u, next” is the first taste of what’s to come from Round 5.
In the first few lines, Ariana begins to address her high-profile relationships with Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez, the late Mac Miller, and her former fiancé Pete Davidson: “Thought I’d end up with Sean/ But he wasn’t a match,” she sings over the twinkling, bass-heavy production. “Wrote some songs about Ricky/ Now I listen and laugh /Even almost got married /And for Pete I’m so thankful /Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm / ‘Cause he was an angel.”
But instead of dwelling in a negative state of mind, the song is more about how grateful of her exes she is for what they taught her. “One taught me love/ One taught me patience/ And one taught me pain/ Now I’m so amazing,” Ariana declares. That’s right, Ariana‘s done with the boys for now – she’s moved on and found a new love within herself. “I know they say I move on too fast/ But this one gon’ last,” she sings. “‘Cause her name is Ari / And I’m so good with that / She taught me love / She taught me patience / How she handles pain / That shit’s amazing.”
Ariana‘s never been one to stray away from her personal life in her music, but “thank u, next” instantly feels A Little More Personal (Raw). After all, what better inspiration to draw from than heartbreak? Ariana‘s pain is, morbidly, our pleasure, resulting in one of the most vulnerable songs she’s ever delivered. The resilience of this woman – Go ahead Ariana!
