She’s back on her beat…
We already knew that the anticipated Carly Rae Jepsen comeback was really, really happening this year. And now, three years after the release of E•MO•TION – the Best Album of 2015, Queen Jepsen has returned at last with her brand new single “Party For One,” co-written by Carly herself and produced by Captain Cuts and HIGHTOWER.
Much like everything that’s come before it, “Party For One” is an unabashedly euphoric punch to the (gay) heart — which is to say it’s a super bright, feel-good and blissfully earnest, ’80s-tinged rush of pop greatness.
Also the lyrics are great — like all of the lyrics. Interestingly, “Party For One” is essentially a self-love anthem — something we haven’t really gotten from Carly before. “You don’t want my love/ If you don’t care about me/ I’ll just dance for myself/ Back on my beat/ Party for one/ If you don’t care about me/ Making love to myself/ Back on my beat…,” she declares. That’s an amazing message, even if it’s a little bit cheesy. She’s done it again!
“To me ‘Party For One‘ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more,” Carly said in a statement. “This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me which is romantic love but self-love too.”
The thing about “Party For One” is that it sounds like a Carly Rae Jepsen throb immediately upon first listen, sitting itself nicely in between “Cut To The Feeling,” “Call Me Maybe” and “Gimme Love.” And yet, it still sounds like a fresh and sophisticated pop song for 2018, remaining strictly a pop record without pandering to any particular cheap radio trends.
Welcome back, Queen Carly. We’ve missed you!
