Normani might be (deservedly) getting a lot of attention for her Calvin Harris-produced double dose this week, but she isn’t the only former Fifth Harmony member looking to make some headlines of her very own.
That’s right, it’s also Lauren Jauregui‘s time to shine!
The 22-year-old songstress has been laying down the ground work for her solo launch over the past year, collaborating with the likes of Marian Hill, Halsey, Steve Aoki and Ty Dolla $ign – and now, she’s ready to officially step out on her own with the release of her debut single: “Expectations“!
On the Kid Harpoon-produced number Lauren is straying far away from the mainstream dance-pop beats of her Fifth Harmony days and switching it up for a super sultry, super moody, waltz banga with an old-timey feel as she releases her frustrations about her lover.
“Wish I had no expectations/ I wish that I could get it through your head/ With no confrontation/ I really wish we could talk about it instead/ All these tears that I cry while I’m turned to the side/ And you’re in the same fucking bed/ Wish I had no expectations/ But I expect, you expect, we expect,” Lauren cries out on the chorus, bringing both the sensual might of Ariana Grande‘s “Dangerous Woman” and The Weeknd‘s “Earned It” to mind.
Really, this is the perfect move for Lauren: Rather than attempting to one-up her radio-ready collection of bops with Fifth Harmony, she’s swerved left and headed straight into a dark and empowering route, instead. She’s got the pipes to pull it off too – Listen below!
