Those of you waiting for a full-length project from Liam Payne are going to have to wait a little longer…
Following his breakup with Queen Cheryl among other life changes, the former One Direction crooner has decided that the music he’s been sitting for his upcoming debut is no longer in tune with his current state of mind. So instead of moving forward with his initial plans, Liam‘s giving us an EP while he returns to the studio to record some new material.
“As you may know, the last few months have seen some big changes for me. I looked at some of the songs on my album which were done a while ago and they felt from another age. I’m determined for my debut album to truly represent me. I’m now back in the studio working hard to finalize the final few new songs on the record,” Liam said in a statement. “I’m genuinely excited about the music I’m writing and recording and I can’t wait for it to be ready for you all, watch this space. In the meantime, this EP is a collection of songs that I’m really proud of and want you all to hear… tell me what you think. As always, thanks for your support – it means the world to me.”
Titled First Time, the project comes packed with four new songs, “Home With You,” “Depend On It,” “Slow” and the title track and lead single, “First Time,” which finds him linking up with French Montana. Interestingly, none of his previous singles made the tracklist.
The collection’s pretty scattered sonically, bouncing in between lots of different influences and flaunting his vocal versatility – there’s some of his R&B-influenced flare with “First Time,” heartfelt storytelling with “Home With You” and “Depend On It.” And lastly, there’s some very on-trend electro-pop serenading with “Slow,” one of the better offerings.
Judging by First Time, it’s clear Liam‘s still working out the exact sound that’ll work best for his upcoming debut LP. But for now, this is a tasty sampling of what’s to come. Listen below!
