It’s time to take a trip into the Dark side of things…
In April, multi-hyphenate musician SG Lewis dropped his 6-track Dusk EP, phase one of his expansive three-part album project entitled Dusk, Dark, and Dawn. “Each phase encapsulates the energy and emotions I associate with these different stages of a night out,” SG said in a statement back in January. “I wanted to create three sonic worlds for these stages in which I can evoke the emotions I felt as a result of night life and club culture, as well as explore creating new music without genre boundaries.”
Following last month’s possibly premature Dawn release of “Better” with rising indie starlet Clairo, SG is ready to move forward with the first offering from the Dark EP, “Hurting” – a club-ready anthem in the making.
The track, which features vocals from AlunaGeorge leading lady Aluna Francis – quite literally indulges in a dark atmosphere. The sound here is much more deep House-leaning and electronic, with a strutting future-bass acting as the backbone alongside an array of cosmic synths and hi-hats.
Meanwhile, Aluna‘s vocal goes through its own set of almost unrecognizable loops as she navigates through the verses. “Hurting for your body/ Hurting for your body and your soul/ You really could be searching/ Begging for a way to make me yours,” she seductively declares, at times sounding distorted to robotic and demonic proportions.
It’s a monster of song that excels on all accounts – LOVE!
SG says “Aluna and I met for the first time in LA earlier this year, and I was talking to her about the album concept, and in particular, Dark. Aluna has been a part of so many dance records that I love, so I knew I wanted to make a club track with her! After we ate burritos and hung out, we made ‘Hurting’ super quickly – the whole process was super natural between the two of us, and she has such an amazing ear for production.”
