2018 has certainly been a year to remember for Ella Mai thus far…
The British songstress’ platinum-selling breakout single “Boo’d Up” has become an official summer anthem, currently occupying the #7 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The single recently held both #1 spots at Urban Mainstream and Urban AC Radio, a rare feat that has not occurred since Pharrell Williams double charted with “Happy” in March 2014. Ella is the first woman to top three R&B/Hip-Hop Radio Charts since Beyonce in 2012. Not bad for a newcomer, eh?
Showing no signs of slowing down, the now LA-based rising talent is already looking to the future with the release of her official follow-up single “Trip,” produced once again by DJ Mustard.
Much like her breakout hit “Boo’d Up,” “Trip” is a purely heaven-sent, breezy R&B production.
“But I think that I’m done trippin’, I’m trip-trippin’/ I’ve been sippin’, that’s how I control/ This feelin’, you keep givin’/ You keep on hittin’ it ooh, oh/ Maybe it’s your love, it’s too good to be true/ Baby boy, your love, got me trippin’ on you…,” she assures us across the tripping hip-hop beats and delicate piano notes, bringing the sensual soulfulness of Toni Braxton to mind.
“Trip” isn’t necessarily better than “Boo’d Up,” but it does feel like the most logical sonic continuation to keep her light shining bright — and it’s arguably even more of an ear-worm. I’m here for some R&B finally getting some real love on the airwaves – WIN!
