Somebody alert the authorities, Robyn is finally back… officially!
Technically, Robyn‘s never really left though. Over the past few years, Robyn‘s kept busy by collaborating with friends like Röyksopp and Neneh Cherry, as well as creating side project’s like La Bagatelle Magique. But as far as solo Robyn is concerned – you know, the one who dropped an incredible three-part Body Talk album on us in 2010, yeah, that one has been missing in action for eight LONG years.
Thankfully, that all changes today (August 1) with the Swedish Queen’s first solo release in years: “Missing U“!
“‘Missing U‘ is about this trippy thing that happens when people disappear. It’s like they almost become more clear. It’s like you see them everywhere,” Robyn said in the song’s accompanying short film. “It’s also maybe a message to my fans, that I’ve missed them.”
Produced alongside longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund, as well as Joseph Mount of Metronomy, “Missing U” finds Robyn falling back into familiar territory, lacing her earnest vocals across a shimmering, synth-heavy production. “There’s this empty space you left behind / Now you’re not here with me / I keep digging through a waste of time / But the picture’s incomplete / ‘Cause I’m missing you / I miss you…,” she cries out.
It almost instantly brings to mind her now classic Body Talk gems: “Dancing On My Own,” “Hang With Me,” “Indestructible,” “Call Your Girlfriend” or even her collaboration with Kleerup, “With Every Heartbeat.” The song is the definition of signature sad disco Robyn, as well as the logical artistic comeback after the success of her previous tear-jerkers. For it’s lyrical content alone, the single deserves all the praise it will surely receive.
It’s a straightforward, endlessly repetitive serenade for the dance floor: Welcome back mama!
