Ariana Grande has been revealing the contents of Sweetener, her upcoming fourth studio album due out on August 17, drop by drop.
So far, we’ve heard the uplifting lead single “No Tears Left To Cry,” the Pharrell-produced “The Light Is Coming” featuring Nicki Minaj, and now (as an early surprise), Ariana‘s dropped off the official second single off of Sweetener: “God Is A Woman“!
The track, which was crafted once again by Savan Kotecha, Ilya and Max Martin – the superstar songwriting team behind most of Ariana‘s instant gems (“Into You,” “No Tears Left To Cry,” “Love Me Harder,” etc.) – is probably not what you were expecting, but it’s still quite good.
Ariana describes “God Is A Woman” as a “sexual female empowerment” song and “how women are literally everything and the universe is inside of us.” It indeed plays out like a “sexual female empowerment” anthem, like a blend of her very own “Everyday” and “Let Me Love You” as she confidently laces her infectious vocals across the bass-heavy, R&B-meets-electro-pop production.
“You, you love it how I move you/ You love it how I touch you, my one/ When all is said and done/ You’ll believe God is a woman,” Ariana declares. “And I, I feel it after midnight/ A feelin’ that you can’t fight, my one/ It lingers when we’re done/ You’ll believe God is a woman.”
There’s no denying that Ariana‘s voice sounds top notch here; she’s truly one of the finest of all the pop girls we have – but “God Is A Woman” isn’t exactly a game-changer of a song. At best, it’s a grand display of Ariana‘s growth and increasingly confident personality.
UPDATE: The music video has just been released and it’s MAJOR. Brings the song to the level I was hoping for. You did good, girl. She’s a WOMANNNN!!!
