Woop woop woop woop woop woop woop! Who saw this one coming?
Over the past two years, UK production trio Clean Bandit have dropped a solid batch of smashes like the Sean Paul and Anne-Marie-assisted “Rockabye” and “Disconnect” with Marina & The Diamonds and “Symphony” with Zara Larsson, and their Top 5 UK hit “I Miss You” featuring Julia Michaels. They’ve been nothing but consistent – and yet, no new album?
This week, Clean Bandit return with their latest star-studded collaboration and very first 2018 release: “Solo,” featuring Miss Demetria Devonne Lovato!
The soon-to-be summer smash is all about overcoming a break-up and finding your independence. “I’ve been going through a difficult break-up for a long time and the message is you can’t just replace an ex-partner with someone else. You have to be strong in yourself,” front-woman Grace Chatto told the London Evening Standard. “I’ve never been through a break-up like this before… I was always the type of person who would go straight into another relationship.”
Mercifully, they’ve managed to keep their winning formula intact all while squeezing in a healthy serving of Ace of Base-esque reggae-pop. Oh, and stuttering! “I wanna f-woop woop woop, but I’m broken hearted/ Cr-cr-cry but I like to party/ T-t-touch but I got nobody/ Here on my own,” Demi sings above the cool, summer-ready rhythms.. “I wanna f-woop woop woop, but I’m broken hearted/ Cr-cr-cry since the day we parted/ T-t-touch but I got nobody/ So I do it solo…“
“We recorded it over FaceTime. It was crazy,” Grace added about working with Demi. “She was in Alabama in a studio and we were over here. You know when the connection is bad and the speed fluctuates? We couldn’t hear that well, but it turned out really well.”
With its liberating lyrics, feel-good grooves and an entirely unexpected-yet-expected, stuttering breakdowns, Clean Bandit and Demi‘s “Solo” is destined to hit the spot this summer. GET INTO IT!
