Just one month after celebrating the one-year anniversary of his seventh studio album The Search For Everything, the Continuum crooner releases a new song called “New Light.” The song, which was produced by hip-hop stalwart No I.D., is not associated with an impending larger project as of yet – but, I think, it’s safe to assume more new music isn’t too far away.
“But if you give me just one night/ You’re gonna see me in a new light/ Yeah, if you give me just one night,” John insists across the mesmerizing, ’80’s-inspired swirl of warm beats, disco bass plucks, crashing drums with his silky smooth, echoing vocals. “To meet you underneath the moonlight/ Oh, I want a take two, I want to breakthrough/ I wanna know the real thing about you/ So I can see you in a new light.”
“New Light” is very much signature John Mayer at its core, enhanced with an indie-pop flare that brings to mind HAIM, or even Bleachers. It’s fresh and nostalgic all at once, and I’m all about it.
