Welcome your very first new Selena Gomez song of 2018: “Back To You“!
In celebration of the upcoming season two release of her hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, the “Good For You” hit-maker has dropped “Back To You,” which is set to be featured on the official soundtrack, out May 18th – the same day season two premieres on Netflix.
Much like her Kygo and Marshmello dance collaborations, “Back To You” – produced by Trackside and Ian Kirkpatrick – sees the pop princess nostalgically reflecting on a relationship that’s she’s wanting to rekindle over a dreamy, guitar-led backdrop.
“I wanna hold you when I’m not supposed to/ When I’m lying close to someone else/ You’re stuck in my head and I can’t get you out of it/ If I could do it all again/ I know I’d go back to you…,” Selena declares before a defiant post-drop provides some extra bite to the song — and some singalong-friendly chanting: “I know I’d go back to you/ I know I’d go back to you…“
Is “Back To You” the most forward-thinking production? Nope! Not at all. In fact, we already have two other versions of this same song. With that said, the song is fine within the context that it’s not for own project, but more so something “very special project” that Selena said she wanted to give to Season 2. “I want it to be a beautiful message in a really complicated way, but really fun,” she said while premiering the song with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio.
In that sense, sure, it’s fine. Listen below!
