Christina Aguilera Announces New Album ‘Liberation’ & Drops The Unexpected ‘Accelerate’!

MY GOD: Christina Aguilera is back!

The pop powerhouse hasn’t released an album in almost six years, but that’s all about to change next month when she finally releases Liberation.

Formally announced on Thursday morning (May 3), Xtina‘s eighth studio album saw its official cover unveiled, along with the full tracklist and arrival date, which is June 15. That’s just slighty over a month away, folks!

Christina‘s comeback cruises in to full speed with the premiere of its lead single and accompanying music video for “Accelerate“! The hard-hitting Mike Dean, Kanye West and Che Pope-produced throb sees Xtina teaming with Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz on a minimal, super vibe-y #SomethingMoreUrban type of bop, which, if anything, is a refreshing and unexpected change of pace – the song, quite literally, changes pace throughout.

Accelerate, c’mon babe/ Pick up your speed/ Stamina, fill me up/ That’s what I need,” she declares. “Another shot, you comin’ home with me/ Fuck all these drugs, fuck all these clubs/ What’s wrong with me.”

The more stripped-back and minimalist promo images and teasers certainly hinted at Christina‘s plan to tip-toe away from her norm, but she’s really feeling her oats this time around, purring confident come-ons above an atmospheric, finger-snapping production. Infused within are elements of R&B, trap, and pop, naturally. All genre’s Christina has touched before.

It’s certainly a risk and the placing of “Accelerate” on the tracklist gives the impression that the material set to follow will lean more mainstream. My one issue? “Accelerate” is truly solid, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that it doesn’t scream COMEBACK and it’s little heavy on the features. Could you allow yourself to be the only talent on your next single, Legend Xtina? Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely feeling this, but I’d really love to hear just Xtina next time. Ya dig?
