Barbie is back, fully!
After taking a break from social media and the spotlight at the top of the year, Nicki Minaj makes her long-awaited return with a double dose of new music. The Young Money diva has unleashed two new singles, “Chun-Li” and “Barbie Tingz,” off her upcoming fourth album.
Named after the first female character in Street Fighter, “Chun-Li” sees Nicki declaring herself as one of the first female rappers to dominate the music game, and still dominates it despite her rivals’ efforts to put her down.
“These birds copy every word, every inch/ But gang gang got the hammer and the wrench (brrr)/ I pull up in that quarter milli off the lot…,” Nicki preaches. “Oh, now she tryna be friends like I forgot/ Show off my diamonds like I’m signed by the Roc/ Ain’t pushin’ out his babies ’til he buy the rock.”
And then there’s the much more fun “Barbie Tingz,” an ’80s-inspired dagger directed at copycats. “Rap bitches tell they team make ’em like Barbie / Had to come off IG so they can’t stalk me,” she raps across the hard-hitting beat, bringing to mind “Boss Ass Bitch” and Lil Mama‘s “Lip Gloss.”
Without a doubt a solid return to form. I’m looking forward to whatever else Nicki has in store for us this era. Welcome back mama!
