Florence + The Machine is officially back. Well, kind of, anyway.
Today (April 12), the ridiculously talented powerhouse that is Florence Welch unveiled the gorgeous visual for “Sky Full of Song” to mark the 2018 edition of Record Store Day, when musical acts from across the spectrum release special and/or limited edition titles on vinyl.
“This was a song that just fell out of the sky fully formed,” Florence said in a statement. “Sometimes when you are performing you get so high, it’s hard to know how to come down. There is this feeling of being cracked open, rushing endlessly outwards and upwards, and wanting somebody to hold you still, bring you back to yourself. It’s an incredible, celestial, but somehow lonely feeling.”
“Sky Full of Song” has got an arrangement way more stark and restrained than we’re used to hearing from Florence, who tends to give us full vocal acrobatics very quickly. But don’t fret, the song still gives Florence plenty of chances to show off: “Hold me down, I’m so tired now/ Aim your arrow at the sky/ Take me down, I’m too tired now/ Leave me where I lie,” she sings across the intimate affair.
In short: “Sky Full of Song” is a gorgeously crafted gem, warm and melodic and stirring. But did you expect anything less?
