While her antics have occasionally left us all shaking our heads, the fact remains that Azealia Banks is undeniably talented.
The Broke With Expensive Taste chanteuse is readying herself for the release of her forthcoming mixtape Fantasea II: The Second Wave, with the first official lead single, “Anna Wintour.” The fashion-inspired anthem follows her standalone “Movin On Up,” which she dropped in early March.
Prior to dropping the track, Azealia shared a lengthy explanation on its history. “I wrote this song about finding myself and finding God. Not at all specific to any religion, this song was written to embody the feeling felt when you connect with the universe,” Azealia wrote on her Instagram. “I relate to Anna Wintour So much as a strong, powerful and larger than life soul in a petite, tidy and feminine body. While others may see Anna as intimidating, I see a woman who was born into this world with an absolute certainty about her place in it.”
Say what you want to say about her but “Anna Wintour” is an absolute triumphant that sees her bringing back that winning, ’90’s House-leaning sound of the 1991 EP – the reason we started to stan! “Anna Wintour” expands on that sound, as she serves up one of her best dance floor diva impressions yet while blurring the line between hip-hop and club bop.
“Now I feel in love babe/ I really know that your love is enough and I’m so lucky you – found me in the day, I needed love/ Now I feel in love babe, everywhere you are,” she sings across the Junior Sanchez-produced bounce along early ’90’s House melodies and ballroom-ready, strut-friendly grooves.
This is the Azealia Banks I’ve been wanting back. PRAISE! She’s still got it.
