Toni Braxton is strutting on to the March 23rd release of new album, Sex & Cigarettes!
The smouldering 8-track set is the first solo album from the “Un-Break My Heart” diva in eight years and arrives following the Grammy-winning success of her 2014 concept collaboration album Love, Marriage, Divorce with Babyface.
Following the genuinely great lead offerings “Deadwood” and “Long As I Live,” Toni‘s decided to provide us with one more reassuring glimpse into the upcoming LP with the release of the title track, “Sex & Cigarettes“!
The track is as soulful and devastatingly heartbreaking ballad that stays entirely true to Toni‘s signature but with a more stripped-back sound than its predecessors. “Yes I do, yes I do, yes I do, I do love you/ And you know, and you know, and you know I put up with too much/ Tell me why do me, why don’t you act like you’re supposed to?/ I guess you’re too cold, too bold to give a fuck,” she confesses over lingering strings and a simple piano melody before launching into the song’s soaring chorus: “You make me crazy, crazy/ I swear you act like you hate me, hate me/ How can you tell me I love you/ Then do the things you do?/ At least try and lie to me, lie to me/ Oh yeah/ Instead you come straight to our bed/ Smelling like sex and cigarettes.” Well, damn.
In usual Toni fashion, it’s a melodic midtempo ballad that’s chock full o’ hurt feelings. I’m completely here for it.
