Once you go dark, you don’t go back… at least that’s the case for The Chainsmokers.
Following their aggressive emo-pop anthem “Sick Boy” and “You Owe Me” last month, the Grammy Award-winning duo continue their trip to the dark side with their latest single “Everybody Hates Me,” now as part of a 3-sided single with its predecessors on the fittingly titled Sick Boy… Everybody Hates Me.
“I post a picture of myself ’cause I’m lonely/ Everyone knows what I look like/ Not even one of them know me/ Yeah, I just want to drink tequila with my friends/ I’m so defeated I just want this shit to end,” frontman Andrew croons on the first verse, staying true to the theme established in “Sick Boy” and “You Owe Me,” before launching into the chorus: “So I walk into the club like, everybody hates me/ I walk into the club like, everybody hates me/ I’m talkin’ to myself, shit, now they think I’m crazy/ I walk into the club like, everybody hates me (everybody hates me)/ Like everybody hates me.”
“Everybody Hates Me” marks the return of The Chainsmokers‘ signature, swooping post-chorus EDM drop and actually makes this dark theme they’re going for a bit more easy to swallow. Yet, I’m still unsure how I feel about this whole new direction. It’s all a bit whiny, no?
