After a 2017 led mostly by the smash success of his Alessia Cara-assisted hit, “Stay,” 2018 holds high expectations for Zedd since “Get Low” with Liam Payne failed to meet the success of its predecessor.
The good news is that “The Middle” totally delivers, seriously. The track sees Zedd reignite his collaborative efforts with Grey, the electronic duo part responsible for his smash “Starving” with Hailee Steinfeld.
The song is an infectious earworm from the very first play that finds Grammy Award-winning Maren steering far away from her usual Country-based pop roots. “Oh baby/ Why don’t you just meet me in the middle/ I’m losing my mind just a little/ So why don’t you just meet me in the middle/ In the middle/ Baby,” Maren sings on the chorus across a subtle clock ticking-driven beat line, loaded with vibrant synth work and percussive elements that aid the song’s eventual peak (aka the “beat drop”).
It’s signature Zedd at his very best. Maren effortlessly owns the radio-ready production, hinting at big crossover potential her in the future.
“We worked really hard on this record to get it just right and it feels great to be able to finally share it with everyone,” Zedd said in the press release about the song. “It was super fun working with Maren because she is clearly an amazing singer and very talented musician. And, I always love working with Grey because we push ourselves to make the best music possible and the end result is incredible.”
