“How many likes is my life worth?“
The Chainsmokers are at it again, but probably not in the way you were expecting with the surprise video for their brand new song “Sick Boy.”
“I’m from the East side of America/ Where we choose pride over character/ And we can pick sides but this is us, this is us, this is,” The Chainsmokers‘ Drew Taggart sings over a simple, lonesome piano melody in the first few seconds of the song. “I live on the West side of America/ Where they spin lies into fairy dust/ And we can pick sides, but this is us, this is us, this is.”
It only gets darker from there as haunting atmospheric sounds and hard-hitting beats kick in, enforcing a big departure from the EDM duo’s usual romantic electro-pop flair. “Feed yourself on my life’s work/ How many likes is my life worth?,” Drew adds on the bridge.
While the track is sure to entice some new fans, it’s a notably a turn toward a more meaningful direction – one that I’m not quite sure they’re capable of pulling off seriously.
