Jennifer Hudson unexpectedly returned with her brand new single “Burden Down” yesterday (December 12), as well as a powerful accompanying music video, directed by Sam Lecca.
The track, produced by Jamie Hartman – the same person behind “Remember Me” back in March, is a powerful and personal slice of soulful balladry that may or may not be a reference to her recent split from longtime partner David Otunga.
“When I lay this burden down/ Who’s gonna take it up for me/ When you run me in the ground/ That’s the day you’re gonna see/ For all I’ve done I’m alone/ Just for a moment can I not be strong/ So how ’bout now oh can I lay/ This burden down,” Jennifer cries out on the song’s goosebumps-inducing chorus. The song organically builds along a very stripped-down production that keeps the focus entirely on Jennifer‘s full-bodied vocals, leading all the way to what is a genuinely epic-feeling climax.
“Burden Down” is being billed as the first single from her anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, due out early next year. If ever there were a Jennifer Hudson song that deserves a full high production treatment for a major live performance at an award show or something, it’s probably this one. Luckily, The Voice gave her a moment to shine all on her own last night – Watch below!
