Louis Tomlinson seems to be the only member of One Direction who is struggling to have himself a solid solo roll out. His Bebe Rexha-assisted lead single “Back To You” had a strong start at first, but it failed to match the success of his former bandmates’ debuts.
Following the release of his special fan track “Just Like You” back in October, Louis is pushing forward with his official second single: “Miss You,” produced by Julian Bunetta and AFTERHRS.
“Miss You” is an unexpectedly rock-leaning move for the singer who based off “Back To You” and “Just Like You” seemed eager to leave the guitars in the past for a smooth transition into radio-ready, electro-pop. The track sits somewhere between the pop-rock stuff of One Direction‘s later work and alternative rock, but it’s not quite cool enough to truly fit into that genre despite Louis‘ insistence on swearing throughout.
“We’re dancing on tables/ ‘Til I’m off my face/ With all of my people/ And it couldn’t get better they say,” Louis sings on the chorus. “We’re singing ‘til last call/ And it’s all out of tune/ Should be laughing, but there’s something wrong/ And it hits me when the lights go on/ Shit, maybe I miss you.”
It’s slightly edgier than the rock-leaning stuff produced during One Direction‘s time together, but down to its core it’s a pop song. 1D fans will be happy, it’s a return to form of sorts.
