Despite how it may seem, Maroon 5‘s Red Pill Blues isn’t actually one of those collaboration albums — which is shocking really, given the fact that everything we’ve heard thus far has in fact been a collaboration. So far we’ve heard the Kendrick Lamar-assisted “Don’t Wanna Know,” “Cold” with Future, the actually very enjoyable “What Lovers Do” featuring SZA, and most recently, “Help Me Out” with Julia Michaels.
On their latest promo single off Red Pill Blues, Maroon 5 enlisted rapper A$AP Rocky for their tender love ballad called “Whiskey” – And it’s easily the most emotional offering we’ve heard from the forthcoming LP, due out on November 3.
“Leaves are fallin’, it’s September/ The night came in and made her shiver/ I told her she could have my jacket/ Wrapped it tight around her shoulders/ And I was so young ’til she kissed me/ Like a whiskey, like a whiskey,” frontman Adam croons across the chilly atmospherics and soft piano melodies. A$AP comes through with a liquor-themed verse about his own romantic recollections: “All of that tequila’s a killa,” he raps. “A little vodka break her off something proper / Pop a cork and play spin the bottle every time you kiss me.”
It’s not anything to necessarily rave endlessly about, but it’s without a doubt a solid change of pace from their more upbeat pop-leaning offerings. Give it a spin below…
