“Un-Break My Heart,” and tell me the rumors are true: Toni Braxton is indeed back. Officially!
The R&B veteran comes back to life with “Deadwood,” the lead single off her forthcoming eighth album Sex & Cigarettes. Due in the coming months, Sex & Cigarettes is the Toni‘s first body of solo work in over seven years. In 2014, Toni teamed up with Babyface and released their collaborative album Love, Marriage & Divorce, which actually won the Grammy for Best R&B Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
So after 3 years of silence on the music front, Toni finally comes back to us with “Deadwood,” a gorgeous guitar-led affair that proves that her distinct tone has lost none of its brilliance. The production by Fred Ball serves as a slick, polished backdrop driving the song’s story about heartbreak to dynamic heights. “Just want to let you know/ I won’t let this one go/ You got me down, but I ain’t out,” she croons. “Think you got me good/ Left me like some deadwood/ I may be down, but I’ll turn around.”
It’s classic signature Toni at her very best. Welcome back, mama!
