Word to the wise, don’t mess with Jessie Ware!
The talented UK songstress made her long-awaited grand return at the tail end of July with her confessional, late-night affair “Midnight.” After the premiering the mysterious accompanying music video in August, Jessie has decided to move froward with “Selfish Love,” the second official single off of her forthcoming third studio album, due for release later this year.
The summery, slinky production – crafted alongside Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and Ryan Tedder – slowly builds at a tantalizing “come hither” pace, allowing delicate drums, warm flares of ambient sound and winding, sort of island-tinged pulses to carry Jessie‘s restrained, soulful vocals across the soundscape. “Selfish love, why do I do these things?/ I break you down, just to get my way/ Selfish love, darlin’ you do it too/ You tell me lies and I bend the truth,” she confesses, her vocals layered and echoing to heavenly heights. “And I, I know/ That I can’t get enough/ Selfish love.” It’s a sensual slow burner with a summertime feel — a solid slice of enticing seduction.
The accompanying video sure ain’t too hard to watch, either: Th clip, shot in Mallorca and directed by Tom Beard, is the teased prequel to the “Midnight” video – and, well, it’s totally killer (to say the least). “‘Selfish Love‘ is a track that reminds me why I enjoy singing so much. Even though it’s coming at the end of the summer, I hope you play it in the heat,” Jessie said in a statement.
