Say what you will about Maroon 5 (I’ve already said plenty), but Adam Levine and company have indeed produced a solid tune or ten over the past decade. I still go hard for “She Will Be Loved,” “This Love,” “Sunday Morning,” “One More Night,” “Makes Me Wonder,” “Sugar” and “Moves Like Jagger” featuring Christina Aguilera – SAY!
With that said, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that their latest outputs, the Kendrick Lamar-assisted “Don’t Wanna Know” and “Cold” featuring Future, have felt a bit safe and underwhelming to me despite their successes. Though, with their as-of-yet-untitled sixth studio album still scheduled for release later this year, I haven’t lost complete faith in them… yet.
Today, Maroon 5 drop their third official single from the forthcoming LP: “What Lovers Do,” featuring this year’s breakout future-R&B crooner, SZA!
The dreamy Ben Billions and Jason Evigan-crafted track — plays like a blend of Charlie Puth‘s “Attention” and, some of The Weeknd‘s Starboy cuts (which features a few Ben Billions productions), as Adam coos up against warm synthesizers and an enticing, finger-snapping groove. “Tell me, tell me if you love me or not, love me or not, love me or not/ I bet the house on you, am I lucky or not, lucky or not, lucky or not?“
Although Maroon 5 and SZA are a somewhat inexplicable pairing on paper (it’s a bit random on SZA‘s end), the collaboration makes total sense in song, as the two trade sweetly crooned melodies across the slick radio-ready production.
It’s that earworm of a chorus that really seals the deal: “Ooooh, oooh/ Been wishin’ for you/ Ooh, ooh/ Try to do what lovers do (ooh)/ Ooooh, oooh/ Been wishin’ for you…” An anthem for true lovers of lovers — even I can’t hate on it.
