LOOK WHAT WE MADE HER DO!
As promised, Taylor Swift‘s “Look What You Made Me Do” music video made its big world premiere during tonight’s (August 27) 2017 MTV Video Music Awards – and one thing is very very clear: This is a very different Taylor Swift we’re dealing with this time around.
“I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh! ‘Cause she’s dead!” Yeah she’s dead, along with many of her old personas as Taylor references every single theory that has been used against her in the Joseph Kahn-directed clip.
The video kicks off with a “dead” Tay Tay (wearing the dress from her “Out of the Woods” music video) crawling out of a “Taylor Swift’s Reputation” grave juxtaposed with a shot of her lying in a bathtub loaded with diamonds and more importantly, a single dollar bill – a reference to her recent legal battle with Colorado-based DJ David Mueller. From there, Taylor appears on a snake-covered throne, crashes her gold Maserati in front of paparazzi with her Grammy in-hand (Katy shade?), rocks a dominatrix look in front of her U-squad (“Bad Blood“), and channels a biker before joining a crew of backup dancers for a dance moment.
But the most head-turning moment comes midway through, as a black-clad (current) Taylor stands atop a giant letter “T,” as famous versions of herself from her “Shake It Off” video to “You Belong With Me” video, and more innocent Fearless and Red eras, clamored at her feet before falling to their deaths.
During the last 40 seconds, Taylor essentially roasts herself along with mocking the media and her in-“Famous” statement reacting to Kim Kardashian leaking her conversation with Kanye West by saying the line “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative,” before her other personas yell for her to “shut up!” in unison.
I’m not like the biggest Taylor fan or anything, but I will give credit when credit is due. THIS IS A VIDEO. Bravo!
