I haven’t properly written about Astrid S yet, although she’s already been included on at least a two of my seasonal dance playlists this year. So, let’s change that shall we…
The rising Norwegian pop sensation makes instantly infectious, propulsive pop armed with fresh electro-pop production, emotive atmospheric textures and even bigger hooks, seated somewhere at the table alongside faves like Ellie Goulding, Zara Larsson, Lorde, Dua Lipa and Phobe Ryan. You get the gist, right?
Over the last year, Astrid’s also become quite the “One To Watch” darling, thanks to her consistent string of superb single and EP releases, which include highlights like “Hurt So Good,” “Atic,” “Breathe,” the thoroughly brill “Such A Boy,” and most recently her collaboration with UK production duo Blonde, “Just For One Night,” which I featured as one of my Song of the Week‘s in June.
“Think Before I Talk,” Astrid‘s latest single out Today (August 25), written by Grammy-nominated songwriter Andrew Cedar (Lupe Fiasco, Jason Derulo, Charlie Puth), feels just as fresh as everything we’ve heard, but in a different way as Astrid has a moment of vulnerability, reflecting on things said in the heat of the moment during an argument – and the ensuing regret for what she said.
“Maybe I should think before I talk/ I get emotional and words come out all wrong/ Sometimes I’m more honest than I want/ So maybe I should think before/ Maybe next time, I’ll think before I talk,” Astrid confesses on the hook, across an array of summery acoustics and high-octane pop beats. It’s a realtable gem that hits close to home more than I’d like to admit.
“It’s a song about saying things you don’t mean because you are hurt, frustrated or maybe angry,” Astrid said in a statement. “I hope that a lot of people can relate to this song, and that next time you are about to say something in the heat of an argument, you remember to think before you say something hurtful.” To put it simply: Astrid‘s the poo, so take a big whiff!
