Pink is officially back at it – so you better get this party started once again!
After taking time away from the spotlight to welcome her new son Jameson with hubby Carey Hart, the Missundaztood legend has been slowly tip-toeing her way back into the music scene in the past year via her Alice Through the Looking Glass soundtrack single “Just Like Fire,” as well as collaborations with Kenny Chesney (“Setting the World on Fire“) and Sia (“Waterfall“).
And now, she’s truly returned, this time on her own, with the Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol and Steve Mac co-crafted “What About Us,” the first single off of her upcoming seventh studio album called Beautiful Trauma, which set for release on October 13th — and guess what? Mama’s still got it!
The song might be a direct response to our current consistently-disappointing Presidential administration, but her smooth and reassuring delivery makes the song sound more like an defiant invitation to fight back, and use our voices for good. It’s a #woke, purposeful pop moment, if you will.
Kicking off with light piano riffs and surging synthesizers, P!nk gently croons her way into the calm production as warm pulsations luxuriously fill out the track, bringing to mind signature Coldplay or even Snow Patrol‘s very own “Chasing Cars.”
“What about us?/ What about all the times you said you had the answers?/ What about us?/ What about all the broken happy ever afters?/ What about us?/ What about all the plans that ended in disasters?/ What about love? What about trust?/ What about us?,” she sings.
While P!nk is certainly no stranger to a good ol’ rebellious pop anthem, “What About Us” is probably one of Pink‘s most subtle lead single’s ever. It’s a bit more generic than what I was expecting, yet still impactful and just as much of an earworm – and that’s all we really can ask for. I’m all in – Welcome back!
